Nexplanon (etonogestrel implant ) is among the most effective contraceptives available, with efficacy as good or better than sterilization procedures, but without any of the risks of invasive surgery.¹ Our providers are experts in same-day Nexplanon insertion, removal or reinsertion.

What is Nexplanon?

Nexplanon is a single-rod contraceptive device that contains the hormone progestin and is inserted subdermally (into the skin) in the inner upper arm. It is used for long-acting (3-5 years) and reversible contraception.

How soon does Nexplanon begin working?

Nexplanon begins working seven days after it is inserted.

Insertion is typically pain-free, requiring only local anesthesia, and is done in the office in approximately 20 minutes. It is covered by most insurances – meaning it can be completely free or with a small deductible payment.

What is the efficacy of Nexplanon?

Nexplanon provides contraceptive benefits for approximately three to five years after it is inserted. According to UpToDate, Nexplanon “is among the most effective contraceptives available, with efficacy as good or better than sterilization procedures, but without the risks of invasive surgery.” The pregnancy rate is less than 1 percent (0.1%) in the first year of use. This makes it more effective than the leading brands of IUD (intrauterine devices) which have an efficacy rate of around 0.5% in the first year.²

How long after Nexplanon removal can I get pregnant?

Circulating levels of etonogestrel in your blood are undetectable in one week. You may be able to become pregnant even sooner.

Unlike other hormonal methods or “shots”, if you decide you would like to become pregnant, you may become pregnant immediately after the implant is removed.

What are the side effects associated with Nexplanon?

Side effects of Nexplanon are very rare. Some of these are:
  • The most common side effect is change in menstrual bleeding – this could be absence (amenorrhea) of menstrual bleeding, shorter or longer durations of bleeding patterns.
  • Problems or pain during insertion or removal such as bruising or swelling.
  • Slightly elevated risk of ectopic pregnancy, if the implant fails.
