Infertilty

What are Common Causes of Infertility?

Infertility is the inability to conceive after at least 12 consecutive month’s worth of concentrated attempts. There are many causes of infertility, including obesity, diabetes, heart disease, polycystic ovary syndrome, and endometriosis. Men may also have issues with the reproductive system that can result in infertility. A low sperm count due to hormonal imbalances or an injury may be the cause if the cause for the infertility is attributed to the man.

If a woman is having difficulty conceiving, the doctor may request simple lifestyle changes, such as eliminating alcohol and tobacco products. If the problem is due to a hormone imbalance, hormone replacement therapy may help solve the problem.

What are Symptoms of Infertility?

Infertility may result in certain symptoms that will make it easier for the doctor to help identify the problem. Abnormal periods, no periods at all, mood swings, extreme fatigue, and loss of sex drive are all possible signs that a woman may be experiencing fertility issues. Loss of hair, acne outbreaks, and weight gain may be an indicator that the problems with conceiving may be related to a hormonal imbalance.

Before a diagnosis of infertility is made, a doctor will evaluate the patient’s attempts to conceive and try to determine the cause. If hormones are ruled out, the doctor may look to the reproductive system to determine if there is a health problem or if it is functioning improperly.

What are Treatment Options for Infertility?

When infertility is diagnosed, the treatment options that are offered to the patient will be determined by the cause of the problem. If the cause is determined to be related to a hormonal imbalance or the reproductive system not working the way it should, hormones and other medications may be prescribed to help bring the body back into balance.

If the cause is due to an existing illness or health condition, like endometriosis or fibroid cysts on the ovaries, the doctor may treat those conditions first. Once the existing health problems are brought under control, the doctor will then begin to treat the infertility, if treatment is still necessary.
